The inhabitants of the Benue River basin in northern Nigeria. The population is estimated at over 2 million. They speak Benue-Kongo languages of the Niger-Congo family. They live on agriculture, cultivating millet and other cereals, and yams, and practicing crop rotation. They have many goats and chickens, but livestock raising of cattle and horses is not common due to tsetse flies. They practice polygamy, and their society is based on patrilineage, with people who trace their lineage from a common ancestor forming local communities. A complex marriage system that included exchange marriages, abduction marriages, sale marriages, and compensation marriages was practiced until it was banned in 1927. There was no chief until the British government appointed one in 1948, and political decisions were made by the elders. Some have converted to Christianity and Islam, but their traditional religion of believing in Akombo (the power of God) remains deeply rooted.
