A semiconductor element whose resistance value changes depending on the magnitude of the applied voltage. There are semiconductor rectifiers and diodes whose resistance value changes depending on the direction of the voltage, and silicon carbide elements whose resistance value does not change depending on the direction of the voltage. They have the characteristic that their resistance value decreases rapidly when the applied voltage is increased, and are used to absorb surge currents, protect contacts, and in constant voltage devices. Those that utilize the thermal effect of semiconductors are called thermistors.

印加電圧の大きさにより抵抗値が変化する半導体素子。電圧の方向により抵抗値の異なる半導体整流器やダイオードなどと，電圧の方向によって抵抗値の変わらないシリコンカーバイド（炭化ケイ素）素子がある。印加電圧を増加すると急激に抵抗値が減少する特性をもち，サージ電流の吸収，接点の保護，定電圧装置に使用。なお，半導体の熱的効果を利用するものはサーミスターと呼ばれる。
