Ariake Andon

A type of zashiki andon. In the Edo period, they were kept burning all night at the pillowside of bedrooms. They are small, cubic hand-held andon lamps, with the side panels of the fire box or box lid cut into a crescent or full moon shape, allowing the brightness of the light to be adjusted when reading a book or going to sleep. They are elegant, painted black or vermilion.

座敷行灯の一種。江戸時代、寝室の枕(まくら)元において終夜ともし続けた。構造は小形立方体の手提げ行灯で、火袋または箱蓋(はこぶた)の側板が三日月形や満月形などに切り抜かれていて、書見、就寝などのとき灯火の明るさを調節できるようになっている。黒や朱で塗り上げた風雅なもの。
