A type of zashiki andon. In the Edo period, they were kept burning all night at the pillowside of bedrooms. They are small, cubic hand-held andon lamps, with the side panels of the fire box or box lid cut into a crescent or full moon shape, allowing the brightness of the light to be adjusted when reading a book or going to sleep. They are elegant, painted black or vermilion. [Mizuo Miyamoto] [Reference item] |Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
