Sada Kobu Shell Mound

Japanese: 佐太講武貝塚 - さだこうぶかいづか
Sada Kobu Shell Mound
A Jomon period site in Nabun, Kashima-cho, Yatsuka-gun, Shimane Prefecture. The shell layer spreads over an area of about 100m in diameter on the lowlands and hills at an altitude of 0-3m on both sides of the Sada River, which connects Lake Shinji with the Sea of Japan. Stone tools are scattered over an even wider area. This shell mound has been known in the San'in region since ancient times and is also called the Unada Shell Mound. The shell layer is mainly composed of Yamato corbicula, with small amounts of marine shellfish, fish bones, animal bones such as deer and wild boar, and natural remains such as chestnuts. The Jomon pottery excavated is mainly round-bottomed striated pottery with reticular patterns added to the front and back of the vessel walls using bivalve shells of the genus Anadara, and there are also a few pottery fragments with claw-shaped, Jomon, and ridge-band patterns.
