Yogavāsiṣṭha (English spelling)

Japanese: ヨーガバーシシュタ（英語表記）Yogavāsiṣṭha

An ancient Indian philosophical text, also known as the Vāsiṣṭha-rāmāyaṇa. Written based on the Ramayana, one of the two great Indian epics, the text is written in the form of a dialogue between the Vāsiṣṭha sage and Rama. Its main content is that one should attain bliss through the practice of yoga, but it also contains many views that go beyond the traditional doctrines of Brahmanism, such as not praising escaping from the world of desires, but rather encouraging one to remain in secular life, arguing that charity and rituals are not necessarily effective ways to attain liberation, and teaching that even the teachings of the scriptures should not be followed if they go against reason.

古代インドの哲学文献。別名を《バーシシュタ･ラーマーヤナVāsiṣṭha‐rāmāyaṇa》ともいう。インド二大叙事詩の一つ《ラーマーヤナ》に基づいて書かれたもので，バーシシュタVāsiṣṭha仙とラーマとの対話形式で論述が進められている。ヨーガの実践により至福に到達すべきことを主たる内容としているが，欲世からの遠離を賞揚せず，むしろ世俗生活にとどまることを勧め，布施や祭式が解脱に至る手段として必ずしも有効でないと主張し，聖典の説であっても条理に反すれば従うべきではないと説くなど，伝統的なバラモン教の教義を踏み出た見解が随処に述べられている。
