Casein Fiber - Casein Fiber

Japanese:
Casein Fiber - Casein Fiber

A fiber made from milk casein. Only milk casein fiber has been industrialized. It was first successfully produced in Italy in 1935, and industrialized by Snia Viscosa under the name Lanital, with production reaching 1200 tons/year in 1937. After World War II, it was renamed Merinova. In the UK, Coutaulas produced milk casein fiber Fibrolane. In the US, Aralac was produced for a time, but was replaced by Vicara, which used zein, a corn protein. Milk casein obtained by precipitation with acid from skimmed milk is dissolved in a sodium hydroxide solution, and the spherical molecules are linearized by aging. Spinning is carried out in a spinning bath containing salts and insolubilizing agents such as formaldehyde. After tensioning and insolubilization treatment, the fiber is washed with water, dried, cut, and used as staples. It generally has low strength and high elongation. It is not dyeable. Currently, fibers are also produced by copolymerizing casein with acrylonitrile.
