…He rose to a high position as a judicial official, but because of his independent and unrestrained speech activities, he fell foul of the Prussian authorities and was dismissed from his post in 1867. After German unification, he became a member of the German Imperial Diet, and in his later years, he produced many books and translations as an independent philosopher. He is well known in the history of law for the shocking lecture he gave in 1847 while he was an official, entitled “On the worthlessness of jurisprudence as a science” (later published as a paper). At the time, the so-called Pandegtent jurisprudence was at its height, but as a pioneering manifesto expressing fundamental skepticism towards traditional jurisprudence methods, it paved the way for R. Jhering’s later purposive jurisprudence and the subsequent liberal theory of law. …
