… With the birth of the independent state of Latvia in 1918 (with control of the entire country in 1920), Riga became the capital of the indigenous Latvians for the first time, and national culture flourished. Representatives of this were the national writer Rainis and the folk music composer Janis Mediņš (1890-1966). In 1919, the first university in Latvia, the University of Riga, was founded, and Janis Endzelīns (1873-1961) completed six volumes of the Latvian Dictionary, worked to establish the standard language, and compiled 12 volumes of the Latvian Songs, making a great contribution to raising national consciousness. …
