…After graduating from St. John's College, Oxford, he taught at the University of Reading from 1947 to 1955, then resigned to concentrate on writing. He started out as a poet with his debut novel, Mixed Feelings (1951), but his picaresque novel, Hurry Down (1953), which depicts the rootless and rude youth of the time, made him famous as one of the "Angry Young Men." He published a series of full-length novels, including "Being in the Present" (1955), "The Contenders" (1958), "The Travelling Woman" (1959), "Beat Your Father to Death" (1962), and "Winter in the Mountains" (1970), which won the Maugham Prize (1958). His style gradually deepened, proving that he was no mere anti-conventional writer. He also published poetry collections such as Weep Before God (1961) and critical works such as Arnold Bennett (1967) and Samuel Johnson (1974). Together with Amis and others, he is a representative figure of the New Movement that emerged in the 1950s, which was politically neutral and intellectually valued empiricism.
