German Sanskrit scholar. Born in St. Petersburg, he arrived in Jena in 1868 and moved to Leipzig in 1885. He left a legacy of outstanding achievements in Sanskrit language and literature, including "Reader in the Sanskrit Language" (1845), "Pānini Grammar" (1887), three volumes of "Indian Proverbs" (1870-1878), and "Indian Rhetoric" (1890). The seven volumes of the "Great Sanskrit Dictionary" (1853-1875), which he compiled with Rudolf Roth (1821-1895), is a monumental undertaking in Sanskrit studies that is still in existence today.
