Otto von Böhtlingk

German Sanskrit scholar. Born in St. Petersburg, he arrived in Jena in 1868 and moved to Leipzig in 1885. He left a legacy of outstanding achievements in Sanskrit language and literature, including "Reader in the Sanskrit Language" (1845), "Pānini Grammar" (1887), three volumes of "Indian Proverbs" (1870-1878), and "Indian Rhetoric" (1890). The seven volumes of the "Great Sanskrit Dictionary" (1853-1875), which he compiled with Rudolf Roth (1821-1895), is a monumental undertaking in Sanskrit studies that is still in existence today.

ドイツのサンスクリット学者。ペテルブルグに生まれ、1868年イエナに至り、1885年ライプツィヒに移った。『サンスクリット語読本』（1845）、『パーニニ文典』（1887）、『インド箴言(しんげん)集』3巻（1870～1878）、『インド修辞学』（1890）など、サンスクリット語学、文学に優れた業績を残す。ロートRudolf Roth（1821―1895）とともに編んだ『サンスクリット大辞典』7巻（1853～1875）は斯学(しがく)の記念碑的事業で、いまなお生命を保っている。
