The name of a hill mentioned in the Bible. This hill southeast of Jerusalem was a Jebusite fortress, but David captured it, named it the "City of David," and placed the Ark of the Covenant there. After Solomon built the temple on Mount Moriah, north of the city, the mountain was called Zion. Later, the name came to refer to the entire city of Jerusalem, and the expression "Daughter Zion" to its inhabitants. Zion is also used symbolically as the "City of God," since it is the hill where God resides. Zion |
