...The tradition of these classical literary works, which preach Islamic peace, was carried from the mosque to the marketplace through such individual figures as Muyaka bin Haji (1776-1840), and Shaaban established a modern prose style. The achievements of current Swahili writers such as Penina Muhando (1948- ) and Euphrase Kezilahabi (1944- ) cannot be considered without considering Shaaban's contributions. The same can be said of writers such as Peter Abrahams (1919- ), Mphahlele, and La Guma, who depicted the brutal experiences under apartheid and brought contemporary South African literature to the world stage.
