Prince Hoshikawa

Year of birth: Year of birth and death unknown. A prince of Emperor Yuryaku who appears in the Nihon Shoki. His mother is said to be Kibi Kamimichiomi's daughter Wakahime, but there are other versions. According to the Nihon Shoki, when Emperor Yuryaku died and Emperor Seinei ascended to the throne, he started a rebellion at the urging of his mother Wakahime and took control of the Otomi clan, but before the arrival of the navy of Kibi Kamimichiomi (name unknown), who had heard of the rebellion, to support the prince, they were suppressed and burned to death by the forces of Otomo Muroya and Azuma Kanjo. This is a noteworthy legend of a rebellion in which the powerful chief of the Kibi region (Okayama prefecture) attempted to usurp royal authority with the military strength of Kibi Kamimichiomi as a backing, and reflects the unique position of the Kibi forces who had marriage ties with the royal family. After the rebellion, Emperor Seinei is said to have taken control of the Yamabe clan under Kamimichiomi's control. He does not appear in the Kojiki.

『日本書紀』にみえる雄略天皇の皇子。母は吉備上道臣の娘稚媛とするが異伝もある。『日本書紀』によれば雄略天皇の死,清寧天皇即位に際し,母稚媛の勧めで反乱を起こし大蔵を抑えるが,乱を知った吉備上道臣(名は不詳)の皇子支援水軍の到着を前に大伴室屋,東漢掬の軍に鎮圧され,焼き殺された。吉備上道臣という吉備地方(岡山県)の有力首長の軍事力を背景に王権の簒奪を図るという注目すべき反乱伝承であり,大王家と婚姻関係を持つ吉備勢力の特異な立場を反映している。乱後,清寧天皇は上道臣支配下の山部を取り上げたという。『古事記』にはみえない。
