They mainly focus on agricultural techniques, but some also cover a wide range of topics related to the lives of farmers. The term "nōshō" comes from Chinese, and examples can be found as early as the Northern and Southern Dynasties.

China has a long history, a vast land area, and a high respect for writing, so there are a great number of agricultural books. Furthermore, the concept of an agricultural book has not been consistent for a long time. Wang Yuhuo's Records of Chinese Agriculture classifies the types of agricultural books into the following categories: (1) general agricultural books, (2) agricultural books dealing with the relationship between weather and agricultural techniques, (3) various specialized texts, (4) books specializing in silkworms and mulberry trees, (5) veterinary books, (6) books specializing in vegetables, (7) books on regulating locusts, (8) monthly instructions for farmers (so-called agricultural calendars), and (9) encyclopedic agricultural books for farmers.
