Pliny the Younger - Pliny the Elder

Roman politician and author. Nephew of Pliny the Elder. He was governor of Bithynia in Asia Minor. He wrote a laudatory speech to Emperor Trajan (Odes) and ten volumes of letters written for publication. Among his most famous letters are one describing the eruption of Mount Vesuvius and another about the treatment of Christians. He is known as Pliny the Younger. ローマ帝政期の政治家，著作家。プリニウス（大）の甥(おい)。小アジアのビテュニア知事として業績をあげた。トラヤヌス帝に対する称賛演説（《頌詞》）と，出版を目的に書いた《書簡集》10巻が現存する。中でもベスビオ火山の爆発を描いた手紙，およびキリスト教徒の扱いに関するトラヤヌス帝との往復書簡が名高い。小プリニウスと呼ばれる。
