Born: May 15, 1900, Irkutsk [Died] January 8, 1967. Moscow Soviet director. He studied directing under Meyerhold, and in 1932 became director at the Realistichesky Theatre in Moscow. Inspired by Eisenstein's theory of montage, he applied it to theatre and directed Shakespeare's and Greek plays. When the theatre closed in 1938, he moved to the Vakhtangov Theatre, and in 1943 became director at the Revolutionary Theatre. His representative works include The Young Guard (47), Hamlet (54), and Medea (61).
