1843‐1901 Italian politician. His father was a political refugee, and he received his military training in the Kingdom of Sardinia. He made a name for himself by taking part in the War of Independence against Austria in 1859, the Sicilian expedition of Garibaldi's Thousand in 1860, and the Venetian War of Liberation in 1866. After the establishment of a unified nation, he became one of the central figures in Italy's irredentism (the movement to recover unrecovered territories), and from 1889 until his death, he belonged to the republican faction as a member of the lower house representing the southern region (Puglia).
