A lake in southern Ibaraki Prefecture. Also called Nishiura, it has an elevation of 0.2m, an area of 168.22km2 (the second largest in Japan after Lake Biwa), and a maximum depth of 7.3m. There are inlets called Takahama-iri to the north and Tsuchiura-iri to the west, and the Sakuragawa, Onogawa, and Koisegawa rivers flow into the lake, and the Kitatonegawa at the southeastern end drains the lake into the Tone River. It is a mostly freshwater eutrophic lake, and fish such as smelt, icefish, and carp are caught here, but water pollution has progressed and it has become stagnant. In the Middle Ages, it was an important inland waterway and a base for sailors. In the early modern period, Kasumigaura 48 Tsuchi was an autonomous organization of the fishermen of the lake, and they resisted the Mito domain. After the Meiji period, smelt sailing boats were used and became a feature of the lake. Settlements such as Tsuchiura, Takahama (Ishioka City), Aso, and Ushibori developed along the coast. Most of the lake is included in Suigo-Tsukuba Quasi-National Park. In a broad sense, Lake Kasumigaura also includes Lake Kitaura. → Related topics Higashi [town] | Aso [town] | Ami [town] | Ishioka [city] | Ibaraki [prefecture] | Ushibori [town] | Edosaki [town] | Ogawa [town] | Goryugawa | Kasumigaura [town] | Kasumigaura Shijuhachitsu | Kanto Plain | Suigo Tsukuba Quasi-National Park | Tamatsukuri [town] | Tsuchiura [city] | Tsuchiura Domain Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
西浦ともいい,標高0.2m,面積168.22km2(琵琶湖に次ぎ日本第2),最深7.3m。
