Year of death: 1901.5.24(1901.5.24) Born: January 14, 1834 He was the first missionary from the Canadian Methodist Church to come to Japan. After serving as the pastor of the Metropolitan Church in Toronto, he came to Japan in 1873. The following year, while preaching at the Union Church in Yokohama, he met Nakamura Masanao and was invited to teach at the Dojinsha in Koishikawa, Tokyo. In December of the same year, he baptized Nakamura. His wife also taught at the Dojinsha women's department for a time and contributed to the formation of the Koishikawa Band. However, the relationship between Nakamura and Caclan, who insisted that "missionaries should not be employed by the Japanese government or Japanese people and be in a position to obey them," eventually cooled. He returned to Japan temporarily in 1883. He returned to Japan in 1884 and founded the Toyo Eiwa School (the origin of Azabu Gakuen), where he devoted himself to theological education. He also contributed to the translation of the Old Testament into Japanese. After returning to Japan in 1891, he taught at the University of Southern California School of Theology. <References> Masao Takahashi “Keyu Nakamura”, A.
