A former town in Niiharu District, in the central-southern part of Ibaraki Prefecture. In 1997, the village of Dejima was incorporated as a town and renamed. The town occupies a peninsula-like area jutting out into Lake Kasumigaura, and most of the town area is a plateau. In the 1960s, cultivation of land on the plateau was promoted. The town's main industries are fishing and agriculture, forestry, and fisheries, including lotus root cultivation in the surrounding area. The lake shore is included in Suigo Tsukuba Quasi-National Park, and Ayumizaki at the eastern end is known as a scenic spot. In 1987, the 1.1 km-long Kasumigaura Ohashi Bridge was opened. In March 2005, it merged with Chiyoda Town in Niiharu District to become a city, Kasumigaura City. Area: 70.27 km2 , population: 18,713 (2003).
