The Don Juan legend is made up of two elements: the seducer and the stone guest, who mocks the stone statue of a man he has killed and invites it to a meal. There are various theories about the origins of these two elements, but the prototype of the stone guest is thought to be a legend that has been scattered around Europe since the 14th century, in which a ghost appears when a man kicks a skull lying by the roadside and invites the ghost to a meal. The model for the seducer is thought to be a man named Don Juan Tenorio, who frequented the court of Pedro I the Cruel (reigned 1350-69) of Spain, but neither of these have solid historical basis. …
