An aristocrat from the Nara period. Son of Fujiwara no Fusasaki and Princess Muro, daughter of Prince Mina. Originally called Yatsuka, he was given the name of Madate around 760. He served as Uegaji no Kami, Shikibu Daifu, Jibukyo, and other positions, and later held positions such as Nakatsukasho, head of Dazaifu (Dazaifu City), and Shogun of the Juto-e, who were responsible for guarding the Imperial Palace. In 766, when his elder brother Nagate became Minister of the Left, he was promoted to Dainagon and also held the position of Shikibukyo. He was praised for being fair, generous, and fully capable of bearing the heavy responsibilities of a minister, and is said to have been favored by Emperor Shomu. He loved waka poetry, and his compositions are included in the Manyoshu.

奈良時代の貴族。藤原房前と美努王の娘牟漏女王の子。初め八束といい,天平宝字4(760)年ごろ真楯の名を賜った。右衛士督,式部大輔,治部卿などを務め,参議,以後中務卿,大宰府(太宰府市)の長官,宮中の警護を担当する授刀衛の大将などを歴任した。天平神護2(766)年,兄永手が左大臣になると,大納言に昇任して式部卿を兼ねた。公平で度量広く,十分大臣の重責に耐える人物と評され,聖武天皇から寵遇を受けたという。和歌を好み,『万葉集』に作歌が収められている。
