Gyokuen Bonpo

Japanese: 玉畹梵芳 - ぎょくえん ぼんぽう
Gyokuen Bonpo
1348-? A monk from the Nanboku-cho to Muromachi period.
Born in the 4th year of the Jowa era (1336-1468), he was a follower of the Rinzai sect of Buddhism. He followed the teachings of Shun'oku Myoha and studied poetry and prose under Gido Shushin. He later became the chief priest of Kennin-ji and Nanzen-ji temples. He was highly valued by the Shogun Ashikaga Yoshimochi, but in 1420 he became enraged and retired, and his whereabouts thereafter are unknown. He was skilled in ink painting, and his representative works include "Ranseki-zu" and "Rankei Doho-zu."

貞和(じょうわ)4=正平(しょうへい)3年生まれ。臨済(りんざい)宗。春屋妙葩(しゅんおく-みょうは)の法をつぎ,義堂周信に詩文をまなぶ。のち建仁(けんにん)寺,南禅寺の住持となる。将軍足利義持(よしもち)に重用されたが,応永27年(1420)怒りにふれて隠遁(いんとん)し,以後の消息は不明。水墨画をよくし,代表作に「蘭石図」「蘭蕙(らんけい)同芳図」など。
