Born on January 26, 1839. A native of Sendai. He studied Confucianism under Saito Masanori, an assistant professor at the Sendai domain school Yoken-do, and Chinese poetry under Kokubu Seigai. After serving as vice principal at his alma mater Kyoritsu School (later Kaisei Junior High School), he served as a professor at Daito Bunka Gakuin and a lecturer at Tokyo Bunri University.
