The capital of the Republic of Udmurtia in western Russia. It is located on the western slope of the southern Ural Mountains, on the banks of the Izh River, a tributary of the Kama River. It has a population of 655,300 (1999). It is the economic center of the Republic of Udmurtia, accounting for more than 50% of industrial production. Its main industries are metalworking, machinery (weapons, automobiles, motorbikes, machine tools, metallurgy, oil industry equipment, hunting guns), woodworking, construction materials, and food manufacturing. The city is one of the old ironworks centers in the Urals, which developed after a steelworks was built here in 1760, and was also known for its weapons manufacturing. It is currently the educational and cultural center of Udmurtia, with a comprehensive university, medical, agricultural, and technical universities, research institutes of language, literature, and history, and a local museum.

ロシア連邦西部、ウドムルチア共和国の首都。ウラル山脈南部の西斜面、カマ川の支流イジ川の川岸にある。人口65万5300(1999)。ウドムルチア共和国の経済の中心で、工業生産の50%以上を占める。金属加工、機械(武器、自動車、モーターバイク、工作機械、冶金(やきん)、石油工業設備、猟銃)、木材加工、建設資材、食品工業が主要な工業である。市は1760年、当地に製鉄所がつくられて以降発展したウラルの古い製鉄中心地の一つで、武器製造でも知られていた。現在、ウドムルチアの教育・文化の中心でもあり、総合大学があるほか、医科、農業、工科の各大学、言語・文学・歴史の研究所、郷土博物館などがある。
