The capital of Kastoria Prefecture in the western part of Macedonia in northern Greece. It is located on the western shore of Lake Kastoria (also known as Lake Orestias). It has a population of 16,200 (2003 estimate). It is a trading center for timber and furs. After being invaded by the Normans, Franks, and Serbs, it came under the control of the Ottoman Turkish Empire in the mid-15th century and flourished as a key trading point. There are many unique buildings, including Byzantine churches such as the 11th century Church of Panaya Kvelidiki, and the mansions of great merchants from the Ottoman Turkish period. The ruins of the ancient capital, Keletron, are located nearby. [Tomoko Mashita] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
