A genus of mammals that existed in the middle Miocene and became extinct. It was about the size of a cow, lived an amphibious life, and is thought to have lived mainly in the coastal areas of the North Pacific Ocean. Currently, only one species, P. tabatai , is known. Fossils have been found in various places on the west coast of Japan and North America, but complete skeletons have been excavated in Toki City, Gifu Prefecture, Chichibu City, Saitama Prefecture, and on the campus of Stanford University in California, and a large skeleton has also been discovered in Tsuyama City, Okayama Prefecture. It is characterized by a low-profile skull, sturdy limb bones that extend out to the sides of the body, a plate-like sternum that has developed on the chest, and uniquely shaped molars.
