In medieval Japanese society, the most common method of conflict resolution was the chunin system, in which the parties in a dispute entrusted the matter to a third party (singular or plural) called a chunin (mediator), tsurishu, irenshu, tchiryushū, or hibyoshishu, who mediated through the dispute and settled the matter. This chunin system was used by people of all classes, including commoners, feudal lords, and daimyo, and was applicable to civil disputes such as loans, purchases, and land disputes, criminal cases such as sword fights and murder, and even wars.
