〘名〙① 外側を包む皮。⇔内皮。※死（1898）〈国木田独歩〉一「渠(かれ)の人物に就ては〈略〉、内部火のやうに燃えてゐる流動体を外皮(グヮイヒ)鉄の如き冷やかな固形体で包むでるやうなと形容することが出来る」② 動物の体の表面、または体内の諸器官の表面をおおう細胞層の総称。〔解体新書（1774）〕③ 植物器官の外表面が、内部に対し、分化している場合をいう。高等植物の茎や根の表層最外層にある厚膜化した部分。〔造化妙々奇談（1879‐80）〕
