shuraṭa (English spelling) shurata

...The term refers to the police or police officers of the early Islamic period. It is also called shuraṭa or, in the plural, shuraṭ. The word originates from the fourth-type verb ashrāṭa, which means to distinguish one thing from another for a specific purpose. By extension, shruta came to refer to an elite military unit, which then evolved into the term for the police.
