[Numerical words in Japanese]
In modern Japanese, native Japanese words and Chinese numerals (Chinese numerals) coexist to express the concept of numbers from 1 to 10. For numbers above that, Chinese numerals are the norm, but for the numbers four and seven, due to problems with the pronunciation of Chinese numerals (the taboo that shi is related to death and the difficulty in distinguishing between shi and shichi), native Japanese numerals yo (yon) and nana are often used instead while reciting Chinese numerals.
