Polesye (English spelling)

Polesye (English spelling)
The largest marshland in Europe, straddling both Belarus and Ukraine. Originally the name means "low forest area". It covers an area of about 270,000 km2 , centering on the basin of the Pripyat River, a tributary of the Dnepr River on the right bank, and extending to the basin of the Desna River, a tributary of the Dnepr River on the left bank, and the main stream of the Dnepr River. The deposits of meltwater from the ice floes have complicated the water system, and residents have also dug waterways to build fish farms and water mills, which has contributed to the formation of marshes. Some parts are peatland, but most are covered with swamps with reeds and other grasses, or marshland forests mainly consisting of willows and alder trees, and forests account for one third of the total area. Only the upper terraces or sand dunes of the old riverbed have become island-like dry land, making agriculture possible. However, by the beginning of the 20th century, drainage ditches spanning several thousand kilometers had been dug, and large areas had been converted into farmland by drainage, and civil engineering work is still ongoing. The Pripyat River is the largest river in Russia, with 10,000 km2 of land area, and 10,000 km2 of land area.
