Lebanese soldier and politician. Born into a prominent Maronite Christian family. Joined the "Special Forces" under the French Mandate. Became military commander in 1946 after independence and worked hard to build the Lebanese Army. He refused to use the military to suppress the rebels on two occasions: in 1952, when the National Front protested against President Houly's corrupt politics, and in 1958, when supporters of President Chamoun clashed with the National Front supporting Nasser in the civil war, and was recognized as an impartial person. He became president in 1958 and worked to reconcile sectarian conflicts, implemented administrative reforms, and began the development of underdeveloped regions.

レバノンの軍人，政治家。マロン派キリスト教徒の名望家に生まれる。フランス委任統治下で〈特別軍〉に入隊。独立後の1946年軍司令官となり，レバノン軍建軍に尽力。52年ホウリー大統領の腐敗政治に対する国民戦線の反政府デモと，58年にシャムウーン大統領の支持者とナーセル支持の国民戦線とが衝突した内戦の2回にわたり，軍による反政府勢力の鎮圧を拒み，公平な人物としての評価を得た。58年大統領となり，宗派的対立の和解に努め，行政改革を実施し，後進地域の開発に着手。
