1902‐73 Lebanese soldier and politician. Born into a prominent Maronite Christian family. Joined the "Special Forces" under the French Mandate. Became military commander in 1946 after independence and worked hard to build the Lebanese Army. He refused to use the military to suppress the rebels on two occasions: in 1952, when the National Front protested against President Houly's corrupt politics, and in 1958, when supporters of President Chamoun clashed with the National Front supporting Nasser in the civil war, and was recognized as an impartial person. He became president in 1958 and worked to reconcile sectarian conflicts, implemented administrative reforms, and began the development of underdeveloped regions.
