A Jesuit priest. Born in Casto di Valsabia, Italy, he became a Jesuit priest in Ferrara in 1556. He landed in Shiki, Amakusa (Kumamoto Prefecture) in June 1570 (Genki 1), and was sent to Kyoto to evangelize in the same year. He continued his activities in Kyoto for over 30 years and was affectionately known as the Uruganbateren. He was treated well by Oda Nobunaga, and obtained land in Azuchi, where he built a seminary (small seminary) and a priest's house, and also built a Nanbanji (church) in Kyoto. He recognized the excellence of the Japanese people and advocated adaptation to Japanese culture, which led to conflict with the missionary leader Cabral. He moved to the Collegio (large seminary) in Nagasaki in 1605 (Keicho 10), and died in Nagasaki on April 22, 1609.
