Kan Ishii
1921-2009 A composer from the late Showa to Heisei eras.
Born March 30, 1921. Eldest son of dancer Ishii Baku. Older brother of composer Ishii Maki. Won first place in a music competition in 1949 with "Prelude". In 1952, he studied in Germany, studying under Orff and others. Known for his dynamic style, he produced a wide range of works from opera to choral music, dance music, and chamber music. His representative works include the opera "Kasaya to Morito" and the symphonic piece "Karagi to Taiyo no Uta". He served as professor at Toho Gakuen School of Music and Aichi Prefectural University of Fine Arts and Music. Died November 24, 2009. Age 88. Born in Tokyo. Graduated from Musashino Academia Musicae (now Musashino Academia Musicae).

大正10年3月30日生まれ。舞踏家石井漠の長男。作曲家石井真木の兄。昭和24年音楽コンクールで「前奏曲」が1位。27年ドイツに留学,オルフらに師事。オペラから合唱音楽,舞踊音楽,室内楽まで多岐にわたる作品を発表,ダイナミックな作風で知られる。代表作にオペラ「袈裟と盛遠」,交声曲「枯木と太陽の歌」など。桐朋学園大,愛知県立芸大の教授をつとめた。平成21年11月24日死去。88歳。東京出身。武蔵野音楽学校(現武蔵野音大)卒。
