...The premise of most of these theories is that the reader is a secondary entity who interprets the meaning given by the author, a so-called author-centered theory of reading. In contrast, according to the new theory of reading proposed by Wolfgang Iser and others, what the reader is given first is the printed word, a work of art as a physical object. It is the reader's action of reading the work that transforms it into a literary work worthy of appreciation and criticism.
