Battle Command - Senjinkun

This instruction was issued with the aim of establishing "morality on the battlefield" in response to the unstable military discipline caused by the prolonged Second Sino-Japanese War. It was issued by Army Minister Tojo Hideki on January 8, 1941 (Showa 16). It called on soldiers to "embody the true meaning of the national polity" and listed specific practices for putting the spirit of the Imperial Rescript to Soldiers into practice. In particular, the teaching that "do not suffer the humiliation of being a prisoner alive" ideologically rejected surrender, which led to many soldiers being forced to die pointless deaths.

日中戦争の長期化に伴う軍紀の動揺に対処すべく「戦陣道義」の作興を目的として発布された訓諭。1941年（昭和16）1月8日東条英機(ひでき)陸相により布達。「国体の本義を体得」することを将兵に要求し、軍人勅諭の精神を実践するための具体的準拠を列挙している。とくに、「生きて虜囚(りょしゅう)の辱(はずかしめ)を受けず」との教えは、投降を理念的に否定しており、ために多くの将兵が無益な死を強いられることとなった。
