1812‐87 British journalist. In 1841, he became the first editor of the magazine Punch, and later editor of many other newspapers and magazines. His most important work is Labour and the Poor in London, a four-volume series (1851-64), a reportage that transcribed the words of the residents of London's slums and compiled them with a wealth of statistical data.
