British journalist. In 1841, he became the first editor of the magazine Punch, and later editor of many other newspapers and magazines. His most important work is Labour and the Poor in London, a four-volume series (1851-64), a reportage that transcribed the words of the residents of London's slums and compiled them with a wealth of statistical data. It contributed greatly to the relief of the poor and social reform. [Shigeru Koike]

イギリスのジャーナリスト。1841年雑誌《パンチ》の初代編集長となり，そのほかにも多くの新聞･雑誌の編集長となった。彼の著作の中で最も重要なものは《ロンドンの労働と貧民》4巻(1851‐64)で，ロンドン貧民街の住民の言葉をそのまま筆記し，多くの統計的資料とともにまとめたルポルタージュである。貧民救済，社会改革に大きく貢献した。【小池滋】
