1522‐1607 A poet and historian born in Seville, Spain. He went to the New World at a young age and spent his life there. He is the author of the long poem written in Spanish, "Sorrowful Song in Memory of the Famous Men of the Indies" (1589). Although the work itself is not highly regarded as a literary work, it is a valuable document for learning about the life of a Spaniard who achieved fame through the discovery and conquest of the New World. He also wrote "History of the New Kingdom of Granada." [Someda Hideto] Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
