Juan de Castellanos

1522‐1607
A poet and historian born in Seville, Spain. He went to the New World at a young age and spent his life there. He is the author of the long poem written in Spanish, "Sorrowful Song in Memory of the Famous Men of the Indies" (1589). Although the work itself is not highly regarded as a literary work, it is a valuable document for learning about the life of a Spaniard who achieved fame through the discovery and conquest of the New World. He also wrote "History of the New Kingdom of Granada." [Someda Hideto]

スペインのセビリャ生れの詩人，歴史家。若くして新大陸へ渡り，生涯を過ごした。スペイン語で書かれた長編詩《インディアスの令名高き人びとを偲ぶ悲しみの歌》(1589)の著者。作品自体の文学的評価は高くないが，新大陸の発見や征服で功名をあげたスペイン人の生涯を知るうえでは貴重な文献である。ほかに《新グラナダ王国史》も著した。【染田秀藤】
