Japanese: 束脩 - そくしゅう

〘 noun 〙 A bundle of dried meat. In ancient China, this was brought as a gift when visiting a teacher for the first time. By extension, it refers to a monetary gift brought when entering a school. Money paid at the time of enrollment. ※Ryo Gikai (718) Gaku "Ordinary students <abbreviated> When they first _enter school, they all perform the ceremony of _graduation with their _teacher ." ※Essays, Oritaku Shiba no Ki (around 1716) Vol. 1 "I have been going in and out of his school for many years, and before we even had a chance to perform the ceremony of graduation, we have become close master and disciple."
