Kaensou - Kaensou

Japanese: カエンソウ - かえんそう
Kaensou - Kaensou

It is an evergreen, climbing perennial plant of the Rubiaceae family (APG classification: Rubiaceae), and is found in a wide area from southern Brazil to Peru and Argentina. The leaves are opposite, long ovate, and heart-shaped at the base. It differs from other species in that the leaves are hairless. The flowers grow singly in the leaf axils, are red and tubular, 4-5 cm long, and bloom from winter to spring. They have a strong emetic effect and are said to be used medicinally in their native land. They were introduced to Japan during the Kaei era (1848-1854), but are no longer cultivated. The genus Manettia has about 130 species distributed in tropical America. A closely related species, M. inflata Sprague, is found in Uruguay and Paraguay. The flowers are orange-red, tubular, densely covered with coarse short hairs on the outside, and yellow at the tip. A sturdy climbing plant that can be attached to a pole or used in a hanging pot. Flowers from winter to spring. Propagate by cuttings. Overwinter at temperatures above 8°C.
