A perennial plant of the Rosaceae family. It is found throughout Japan and East Asia, and commonly grows in fields and roadsides. The stems are covered with long soft hairs, and grow long and crawl along the ground during the fruiting season. The basal leaves are long-stalked and trifoliate, with ovate leaflets and ovate-lanceolate stipules at the base of the petiole. From spring to early summer, long stalks emerge from the leaf axils and produce yellow flowers about 2 cm in diameter. There are five calyxes and five petals of the same size, and there are many stamens and pistils. The achenes are small and red and granular, and when ripe, they are scattered on the pale pink, spongy thalamus, forming a spherical aggregate. The fruit tastes bad and is not eaten, but the popular belief that it is poisonous is incorrect.
