French theologian. He fled to Geneva and taught classical languages and the Bible, but came into conflict with Calvin over biblical interpretation, and moved to Basel, where he lived a lonely and difficult life. In addition to his innovative and simple French translation of the Bible, he became a pioneer of tolerance and pacifism with his works On the Heretics (1554), which criticized the intolerance of Calvinists and rejected the execution of heretics by secular authorities, and Exhortation to Troubled France (1562), which rejected religious wars and preached the inviolability of individual faith and conscience.
