An industrial, port, and tourist city in southwestern California, USA. Population: 434,000 (1994). Located in the southern part of the Los Angeles metropolitan area, facing San Pedro Bay, it has a 13.5 km long beach. Founded in the 1880s during the land boom, it was settled by many people from the Midwest (especially Iowa) and developed as a beach resort for Los Angeles. The discovery of oil in Signal Hill to the north (1921) and the development of the port led to rapid industrialization, and the city grew further with the expansion of the Los Angeles metropolitan area after World War II.
