It is a perennial plant of the Balsaminaceae family (APG classification: Balsaminaceae), but in horticulture it is treated as an annual plant. Native to South Africa. Japanese name: African Impatiens. Recently, breeding has progressed, and dwarf hybrids with many flowers that are easy to cultivate are often used. It is a highly ornamental plant that grows well in summer flower beds, hanging pots, and planters, and grows in partial shade and blooms well in the shade of trees. It has a wide variety of flower colors, including red, pink, orange, reddish purple, and white, as well as double flowers and ones with white spots on the leaves. In recent years, a new large-flowered species called New Guinea hybr. has been developed, and there are large varieties with complex colored leaves such as copper leaves and white-yellow spots. Most varieties are patented and self-propagation is prohibited. It can be easily grown from seeds or by cuttings, with seedlings germinating well at 20-25°C. After germination, the seedlings should be grown in light shade and gradually increased sunlight. The optimum temperature for growth is around 20°C. The New Guinea and double-flowering varieties are propagated by cuttings. Cuttings are grown in river sand, etc., and will root after about two weeks at 20-25°C. After transplanting, provide shade to help them take root. It grows vigorously and likes water, so be sure to water it thoroughly. It is prone to root congestion, so early repotting and additional fertilization will allow it to bloom for a long period of time.

ツリフネソウ科（APG分類：ツリフネソウ科）の多年草であるが、園芸上は一年草として扱う。南アフリカ原産。和名アフリカホウセンカ。最近は品種改良が進み、一代交雑種の矮性(わいせい)多花の栽培しやすいものが多く利用される。夏花壇、吊(つ)り鉢、プランター植えなどによく、半日陰にも育ち、樹陰でもよく開花する観賞価値の高い植物である。花色も豊富で、赤、桃、橙(だいだい)、赤紫、白やそれらの白覆輪咲きなど非常に多彩で、八重咲きや葉に白斑(ふ)入りのものなどもある。近年ニューギニア・インパチエンスNew Guinea hybr.といわれる大輪系の新種が開発され、銅葉、白黄斑葉など複雑な覆色葉をもつ大形品種があり、ほとんどの品種に植物特許がついていて自家増殖が禁じられている。栽培は実生(みしょう)、挿芽も容易で、実生は20～25℃でよく発芽する。発芽後は軽く日よけをして育苗し、徐々に日当りを強くしながら育てる。生育適温は20℃内外である。ニューギニア系、八重咲き系は挿芽で繁殖する。川砂などに挿芽をし、20～25℃で約2週間後に発根する。移植後は日よけをし、活着をよくする。生育が旺盛(おうせい)で水を好むため灌水(かんすい)は十分にする。根詰まりをおこしやすいので早めの植え替えをし、追肥を施すと長期間花を咲かせることができる。
