...After the great eruption of Maruyama in 1785 (Tenmei 5), all residents evacuated to Sueyoshi in the southeast of Hachijojima and engaged in farming, leaving Aogashima uninhabited for about 50 years, but in 1834 (Tenpo 5), they returned to the island and formed the present settlement. The settlement of Ikenosawa is located in the caldera inside the outer rim of the volcano, and is protected from the wind and warm in winter thanks to the geothermal heat of the crater floor. The area was completely dependent on rainwater, but from around 1980, simple water supply systems became widespread, and since then, more and more facilities have been installed and improved. ...
