Dorset is the capital of the county of Dorset in the southwest of England. It is located in the West Dorset district. It is located on high ground on the right bank of the River Frome, about 40 km west of Bournemouth. It is an ancient town known as Durnovaria in Roman times. It hardly appears in Anglo-Saxon records, but it is listed as a chartered town in the Domesday Book (1086), a land survey by William I, and records from the 12th and 13th centuries indicate that there was a castle here. In the Middle Ages, it developed as a market town. In the 16th century, the textile industry was thriving, and in the 17th century, it was known for the production of serge. It is a distribution center for a wide agricultural area, with industries such as agricultural machinery, printing, and leather, and since the 17th century, beer brewing has also been carried out. The great writer Thomas Hardy was born near the city, and there is a museum that preserves his research materials. In the southern suburbs, there are ruins of an amphitheatre dating back to pre-Roman times. Population: 16,171 (2001). Dorchester |
