Gas interferometer

A type of gas measuring device that is widely used in coal mines to measure the concentration of methane gas in the air inside the mine. It uses the interference of light caused by the difference in refractive index between methane gas and air, and its principle is as follows. As shown in the figure, a light beam from a light source passes through a lens to become a parallel beam, then passes through a slit and reaches a parallel plane mirror. Here, the beam splits into two, which pass through a gas chamber and an air chamber, respectively, and reach a right-angle prism, are reflected in turn, and travel through the gas chamber and air chamber again, reaching the parallel plane mirror.

ガス測定器の一種で，炭鉱で坑内空気中のメタンガス濃度を測定するのに広く使用されている。メタンガスと空気との屈折率の差による光の干渉を利用したもので，その原理は以下に述べるとおりである。図のように光源からの光線がレンズを通って平行光線となり，スリットを経て平行平面鏡に達する。ここで光線は二つに分かれ，それぞれガス室および空気室を通り直角プリズムに達し，順次反射されて再びガス室および空気室を進み平行平面鏡に達する。
