Russian admiral and explorer. Born in Estonia. From 1803 to 1806, he commanded two warships and made the first Russian circumnavigation of the world, exploring the coasts of Alaska, the Kuril Islands, Hokkaido, Sakhalin, and other places. In 1804, he arrived in Nagasaki accompanied by Rezanov, the second envoy to Japan, and four others, including Sendai's castaway Tamitatsutayu. His works include "A Voyage Around the World."
