Russian admiral and explorer. Born in Estonia. From 1803 to 1806, he commanded two warships and made the first Russian circumnavigation of the world, exploring the coasts of Alaska, the Kuril Islands, Hokkaido, Sakhalin, and other places. In 1804, he arrived in Nagasaki accompanied by Rezanov, the second envoy to Japan, and four others, including Sendai's castaway Tamitatsutayu. His works include "A Voyage Around the World." ロシアの提督，探検家。エストニア生れ。1803年―1806年，２隻の軍艦を指揮してロシア最初の世界周航を行い，その間アラスカ，千島，北海道，サハリンなどの沿岸も探検，1804年には第２回遣日使節レザノフと仙台の漂流民津太夫ら４名を伴って長崎に来航。著書に《世界周航記》がある。
