Paradigm - Paradigm

A word and its concept used in a special way by the American science historian Kuhn in his book The Structure of Scientific Revolutions (1962). As a word, it can be translated as "exemplary" or "model" in dictionaries, and is also used as an example of grammatical inflection, but since Kuhn's use of it has been widely adopted in academic and intellectual circles to this day, and in Japan it is used as it is, without any translation.

According to Kuhn, a "paradigm" is "a widely accepted achievement that, for a certain period of time, provides scientists with a model for how to ask and answer questions about nature." Examples include Ptolemy's Almagest, Copernicus' On the Revolutions of the Heavenly Spheres, and Newton's Principia. Normal science is the work that ordinary scientists do based on a certain paradigm, and when the development of normal science reaches a dead end, irregularities appear and a crisis occurs, and scientists switch to another paradigm, resulting in a scientific revolution. The paradigm shift from Newtonian mechanics to Einstein's theory of relativity is an example of such a scientific revolution. It broke the traditional view of science that the results of scientific research progress in a certain direction cumulatively, and showed that scientific progress changes course through activities carried out over a certain period of time based on a certain paradigm, which causes a scientific revolution. From this, the term paradigm has generally been expanded to mean a framework of thinking, and is often used when seeking new alternatives to replace established practices.

アメリカの科学史家クーンが著書『科学革命の構造』The Structure of Scientific Revolutions（1962）で特殊な用い方をした単語およびその概念。ことばとしては、辞書によれば範例とか模範という訳があり、また文法の語形変化の例として用いられるが、クーン以来、学界・思想界で彼の用い方が広く使われて今日に至っており、日本では訳語をあてず、パラダイムのまま通用している。

　クーンによれば「パラダイム」とは「広く人人に受け入れられている業績で、一定の期間、科学者に、自然に対する問い方と答え方のモデルを与えるもの」とされる。例としてはプトレマイオスの『アルマゲスト』、コペルニクスの『天球の回転について』、ニュートンの『プリンキピア』などがあげられる。あるパラダイムをモデルとして普通の科学者が行っている仕事が通常科学normal scienceであり、通常科学の発展が行き詰まると変則性が現れて危機が生じ、科学者は他のパラダイムに乗り換えて科学革命が起こる。ニュートン力学からアインシュタイン相対論へのパラダイム変換はそのような科学革命の例である。科学研究の成果は累積的に一定方向に進歩するという伝統的な科学観を崩し、科学の進歩は、あるパラダイムに基づいて一定期間行われる活動によって、科学革命がおこり路線が変わるものであることを示した。そこから一般にパラダイムは思考の枠組みというように拡大して用いられ、既成慣行のものにとってかわる新しいオルターナティブalternativeを求める際によく使われる。
